What: Chicken Rendang
Where: Home of a family friend in KL, Malaysia
When: Hari Raya, 11 Aug 2013
The story:
This is my first taste of authentic Malaysian food after twenty years. Airport food doesn't count and hotel food can't compare to this rich, hearty homecooked rendang. It's Hari Raya, when all Muslims break fast, cook wild, and invite a mad amount of guests to their homes. Even the Prime Minister of Malaysia opens his doors for a day and treats everyone to a spread of Malaysian goodness. :)
Sharon, the wife of our family friend, served beef and chicken rendang, steamed rice studded with star of anis and cardamom, lamb, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, and salad with egg and cool cucumbers. Jars upon jars of assorted sweets :)
The taste: a slow and seductive build up of spice upon spice. Nothing quite like homecooked Hari Raya!
